At StepChange Capital, we believe in being an active participant in the Western Canadian technology ecosystem. While the financing landscape is not as robust as technology founders would like, there is capital sitting on the sidelines waiting for a lead to do the work and set the terms. This is where StepChange comes in. We focus on growth / scale-up opportunities where we can be the lead. This allows StepChange the opportunity to frame the engagement grounded in our principles and values, and leverage that position for increased participation and investment rights.
StepChange Capital invests in private technology growth capital opportunities that have already demonstrated commercial traction (TRL 9+). We identify exceptional companies with supporting technologies that solve real-world problems for the Western Canadian based natural resource sectors including agriculture, water, power, energy, environmental services, waste management and related infrastructure. Inherently, these technologies have a global market – we like that!
Opportunities are in the inflection point of the growth / scale up stage where rapid commercialization can have significant impact on enterprise value.
1 – 3 select investment opportunities annually in efficiency technologies with initial North American serviceable addressable markets and with global potential.
Direct ownership in technologies of interest and leveraged major investor and equity participation rights for co-investors.
Strategic and governance leadership. Board, board chair and advisory engagements
Medium Term investments in differentiated private company technology opportunities.
Strategic organizations (including VC's) investing in technology opportunities that support their business.
Successful entrepreneurs and professionals who invest in late-seed, quality, private opportunities.
Every company undergoes significant commercial, technical and strategic review before we commit our own capital.
Unlike a traditional blind pool fund, any StepChange co-investor retains discretion over whether to invest in each company.
We are not the traditional 2/20 model. Our business model keeps costs to a minimum. We do ask for reimbursement of our fees incurred from the company for performing our lead investor due diligence and where applicable, a market standard co-investment fee.
